WINNER: Blueworks OIMS UK and NHS Gloucestershire ICB, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT, Gloucestershire Local Optical Committee: Community Ophthalmic Link between Gloucestershire Hospitals and Community Optometrists
The Community Ophthalmic Link project in Gloucestershire was collaboratively developed between the Local Optical Committee, trust clinicians, ICB commissioners and Blueworks UK to share images and data from secondary to primary eye care. Community optometrists have complete secure access to the hospital eye record. All 66 optometric practices in the region and 251 optometrists/dispensing opticians registered, showing how fundamentally essential this project was. Annually: 11,393 HES patient record searches were conducted and 1,392 HES referrals were avoided. Plus a 16 per cent drop in new patient waiting list was recorded, along with £226,896 in savings annually. It could have a potentially profound national impact, preventing more than 120,000 referrals annually and more than £20m annual savings in England, say organisers.
