National Paediatric Accelerator: Recovery Programme
In May 2021, a collaboration of 10 large paediatric trusts in England came together to deliver a £20m covid recovery programme. The trusts have successfully restored more than pre-pandemic levels of elective activity (104 per cent of pre-covid activity, 38,000 more patients) through transformation programmes. At the cutting edge of innovation the alliance also developed and rolled out across 10 trusts an artificial intelligence tool which identifies children at risk of missing their appointments, helping to support children who have already missed out on care during the pandemic. This supports a programme of work tackling health inequalities and providing lasting benefits, such as free transport to appointments. The judges thought the opportunities for long-term performance recovery and improved outcomes made this entry stand out from the rest.
