Improving The Diagnostic Detection Of Thoracic Aortic Dissection In Hull Royal Infirmary Emergency Department

The department wanted to produce a meaningful response to a tragic event of misdiagnosis of acute aortic dissection. Casenote reviews highlighted significant gaps in clinicians’ knowledge contributing to diagnostic errors. The aim was to perform CT within four hours of arrival for seven consecutive presentations of AAD within one year from February 2022.

A significant and sustained increase in the number of CT aortograms have been performed, with a significant reduction the gap from initial medical assessment to scan request. The judges felt this project captures the true essence of patient safety with a positive cultural shift. “The project demonstrates key improvements in outcomes, clearly resulting in better patient care and an overall improved ethos impacting on both patients and staff.”
