WINNER: Bank Partners (Part of the Independent Clinical Services Group): Reduction of Agency Spend at the Royal London Hospital (part of Barts Health Trust)
The adult critical care unit at the Royal London Hospital admits over 3,000 patients a year but was heavily reliant on agency staff to fill rotas. Working closely with the trust, Bank Partners was able to reduce agency shifts in the unit by 80 per cent in 2016-17 with a saving to the trust of £1.3m.
A member of staff from Bank Partners was placed in the unit’s office for two weeks to understand how it worked. Additional bank staff were recruited and understanding likely fluctuations in demand enabled bookings to be made more in advance. Overall, Barts trust-wide agency spend reduced from £90m in 2015-16 to £75.2m in 2016-17, with improved recruitment and retention rates.
The judges felt that this partnership demonstrated true joint working and collaboration with measurable improvements in terms of both finance and workforce.
