Mersey Care Foundation Trust: No force first

“No force first” has reduced restrictive interventions in the trust by 30 per cent and the experience and learning has now been spread to other organisations. Staff are supported to use interventions which will transform the experience of service users and move the culture of care towards one where physical intervention is seen as outdated. This helps them to avoid situations which might otherwise lead to them using physical restraint.

This has reduced assaults on staff which has led to savings for the trust as less cover is required as fewer staff are off sick. No force first is now used in 50 wards across the trust.

People who have been subject to restrictive interventions are at the heart of the process, and are involved in planning and producing materials and sharing their detailed experiences with staff. This level of collaboration and understanding – often of trauma the service user has experienced and how that affects them now – is a powerful tool.
