Essex County Council: Provider quality innovation team: Prosper programme for care homes and nursing homes

This project has helped care and nursing homes reduce falls, pressure ulcers and upper urinary tract infections by using quality improvement methodology. It has changed behaviours, encouraging staff to think creatively and to assess problem areas and measure the impact of changes. A key outcome has been 82 per cent of homes involved are now rated good or outstanding by the Care Quality Commission – up from 46 per cent before.

Homes set their own goals and adopt a number of measures, using a PDSA cycle. Prosper also supports homes to do root cause analysis of incidents and make changes based on this. Challenges have included changes in managers, meaning work has to restart, plus suspicion about how data might be used. The model has been shared with community health providers now adopting part of it and enquiries have come from as far away as Australia.
