Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust: Treatment of sexual offending in men with mild learning disabilities in the community
Staff were struggling to cope with an increase in the number of people with learning disabilities who posed a risk of sexual offending. A group of clinicians came together to set up a care pathway based on evidence and aimed at enabling maximum safety and long-lasting outcomes. Initially, the group worked with six men, one of whom disclosed offending behaviour midway through the course, leading to other family members being protected. The other five showed positive attitudinal changes towards sexual offending after a number of group sessions.
In three of the cases, significant changes were made to care packages to reduce the risk to other people. Screening of other men referred to the service has also resulted in changes to care packages. Some cases have been closed while other men return for “top ups”. The approach is being refined to include greater working with direct care providers.
