Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust: Sketchnotes and pictorials in healthcare

This project has used visual communication methods to convey information to staff and patients – an idea which has spread through a number of organisations with more than 150 staff taking part in sketchnote club sessions to develop their own skills and build confidence. The focus on creativity also enables staff to think differently and shift approaches.

The colourful drawings have been used in a wide range of ways from improving awareness of pressure ulcers among staff to giving patients information about baby care. While most posters have some simple written information, “no language” leaflets have also been developed. Sonia Nosheen, the transformation manager who set up the scheme with support from senior staff, believes they make information memorable and focus on key points in a pressurised environment. Outcomes have included a reduction in complaints on a children’s ward, due to more information for parents, and improved staff memory of critical processes.
