The six patients on Coral ward are some of the most complex and challenging patients the trust cares for, and had previously been managed by the use of segregation, seclusion and mechanical restraint, often spending much of the time isolated in their rooms. A new approach has reduced restraint and long term segregation, allowing patients more time out of their rooms and doing activities.

This has reduced both violent and self-harm incidents, and has also reduced sickness absence among staff. Decisions are made collaboratively with patients, with the whole multidisciplinary team involved in decisions and a “no blame” ethos. The ward manager has an open door policy and there is dedicated group supervision time, as well as monthly staff meetings and away days.
