North West Ambulance Service: Saving The Lives of Patients in Mental Health Crisis - Developing an Advanced Questionnaire Model to Support Timely Ambulance Dispatch in Cases of Life Threatening Overdose

The national NHS ambulance clinical decision-making tool “Pathways” codes the majority of patients who phone 999 after taking an overdose as a category 3 response. Pressures in the urgent and emergency care system mean that ambulance responses to these calls are often delayed, sometimes with tragic consequences. This project aims to reduce avoidable harm by upgrading the category of 999 call following a potentially life-threatening overdose. NWAS have developed a new process for identification of high-risk overdoses, upgrading those who have taken any of 20 high-risk medications to a category 2 coding and consequent urgent ambulance dispatch.
