Devon Partnership Trust on behalf of South West Regional Secure Services: South West Regional Secure Services – Wave One New Care Model Pilot

A year ago, over half of South West patients requiring low or medium security mental health beds were being treated outside of the region. They also remained in secure services twice as long as was clinically necessary.

Devon Partnership Trust was chosen as a pilot site to reduce this, supporting recovery in the least restrictive setting, as close to home as possible. It developed a clinically led model of care across eight partner organisations (NHS, independent providers and community interest) involving a single point of access across the region, standardised assessment criteria, a regional approach to bed management, and a repatriation scheme.

It has resulted in 64 people being brought back to their home region, closer to their families as well as increased provision for underprovided services, including women’s services and forensic teams. This work has contributed to national design works teams for community forensic teams, prison healthcare and women’s services, as well as influencing NHS England plans for new care models programme.
