Norfolk and Norwich University Foundation Trust: Robotic assisted colorectal service
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital FT adopted robotic surgery for colorectal cases, giving patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery and making savings for the trust.
Irshad Shaikh set up the service after completing training in his own time online and through simulation, and taking study leave to train in Belgium. An existing robot was already used during the week for urology work so volunteers were sought to provide the service on a Saturday.
With 42 cases – cancer and benign – completed, the trust has saved 270 bed days, seen positive outcomes from cancer surgery such as zero per cent residual cancers left, and low complications rates.
The experience has helped it build a business case for a second robot to be used by a variety of specialties. Mr Shaikh is now preparing to train other surgeons in the UK and Europe and he and the team have evolved the robotic technique to use fewer instruments, saving £180 per operation.
