The UK healthcare sector — perhaps more than any other sector in the country — has an especially complex technology infrastructure. And it is in urgent need of attention. Lord Darzi’s recent investigation into the state of the NHS in England has revealed a lack of capital investment over the past decade that has left the service in “the foothills of digital transformation”.
The report stresses the need to “tilt towards technology” and bring infrastructure up to speed with other parts of the economy. By doing this, the NHS can begin to address other key areas identified in the report. Improved networks will make it easier to improve staff productivity, provide care closer to people’s homes, and connect services from different providers. Modern digital tools can also help the system attract and retain staff.
This webinar, in association with Juniper, brought together experts from the NHS, academia, and industry to discuss the infrastructure that healthcare providers need to deliver modern services to staff and patients. We asked where the quick wins lie, what the long-term goals should be, and what influence emerging technologies like AI could have.

Andrew Chronias, chief information officer, Central London Community Healthcare Trust
Andrew has over 25 years’ senior experience working in digital and data across multiple sectors of the NHS at a provider, regional and national level. In his current role as CIO of a community trust, he has delivered digital strategy, infrastructure projects, changes to EPR and data, and reporting. Andrew is a passionate advocate for community services and their contribution to maintaining independence working with partners across four ICSs. He has also served as a judge for the HSJ Digital Awards.
Naomi Elia, UKI head of public sector, Juniper Networks
Naomi is the UKI head of public sector for Juniper Networks. With a key focus on healthcare, Naomi is passionate about exploring how technology can be used to enhance the experience of patients, clinical teams and operation teams. Using her wider experience within government, Naomi has a well-rounded perspective on how AI and innovative technology can be used to address the workforce shortages, funding constraints and operational challenges within the NHS.
Pritesh Mistry, policy fellow, The King’s Fund
Pritesh focuses on how digital tools and technologies can improve health and care. He is particularly passionate about using evidence-based digital technology as an enabler to improve quality of care and outcomes while critically assessing buzzwords and technology as a silver bullet. Before joining the Fund, Pritesh led the innovation activity at the Royal College of General Practitioners. He has also worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust helping to bring together clinicians and patients with research and technology to improve the care and outcomes of people with life-debilitating conditions, such as heart failure.
Ben Shemesh, senior improvement analyst, The Health Foundation
Ben is a senior improvement analyst in the insights and analysis unit working on a range of projects related to AI, technology and productivity. Ben joined the Health Foundation in June 2024 from the Department of Health in Victoria, Australia, where he was a senior project officer in the quality, safety and improvement division. Prior to this, Ben has had experience at Australia’s leading think tank, the Grattan Institute, as well as in research and industry sectors. Ben holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
