A House of Lords amendment to the Mental Health Bill to ensure no child under 18 would be placed on an adult mental health ward except in an emergency has been overturned.Minister for health Rosie Winterton was among Labour MPs who voted against the amendment.

New champion for patients and public
Health minister Andy Burnham has announced the appointment of Arthritis Care chief executive Neil Betteridge as the new national patient and public champion.Mr Betteridge will work with local NHS, key stakeholders and patient groups in an attempt to help deliver the Government's target to reduce waiting times by 2008.

Commons committee debates mental health amendment
The Commons Mental Health Bill committee will today debate a Lords amendment that protects children under 18 from being placed on adult wards and ensures they are looked after by specially trained staff.The amendment is strongly supported by the Mental Health Alliance.

Nursing and Midwifery Council issues code of conduct draft
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has published the latest draft version of its new code of conduct.The publication follows a three-month consultation that involved 2,000 nurses and midwives. A second consultation phase will be launched in June.Find out more here

March waiting figures released
The Department of Health has published inpatient and outpatient waiting time figures for March 2007.Among the findings, the number of patients in England waiting over 20 weeks at the end of March was 15,200, a decrease of 24,900 from February 2007.
