5.50pm The UK Statistics Authority has told health secretary Jeremy Hunt to “clarify” its claims that real terms spending on health has gone up. Chair Andrew Dilnot said “various statements made by the Prime Minister, by yourself, and on the Conservative Party website” had claimed that spend on the NHS had gone up for two years in a row.
Mr Dilnot said: “We would conclude that expenditure on the NHS in real terms was lower in 2011-12 than it was in 2009-10. Given the small size of the changes and the uncertainties associated with them, it might also be fair to say that real terms expenditure had changed little over this period. In light of this, I should be grateful if the Department of Health could clarify the statements made.”
2.57pm: The NHS Commissioning Board has published its proposals for the management of GP IT under the new commissioning system. It has been an outstanding detail in planning for the new system. Although the commissioning board is responsible, it plans to pass most duties and budgets for the issue to clinical commissioning groups. The approach to GP IT has in the past varied between primary care trusts.

12.17pm: HSJ has published an exclusive story about commissioners being bombarded with claims for NHS Continuing Care funding, following a cut-off deadline. There are concerns about how the unexpected liability will be paid for.
11.53am: The Department of Health has announced that from April 2013, the NHS Commissioning Board will include a contractual duty of openness in all commissioning contracts for the NHS. This mean NHS trusts will have to tell patients if their safety has been compromised and learn lessons from mistakes to avoid them being repeated.
10.57am The introduction of seven day consultant care will require more resources and changes to tariff as well as a major reconfiguration of services, medical leaders have claimed. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges’ report Seven Day Consultant Present Care is calling for a national commitment to intorduce seven day working. Director of NHS Employers Dean Royles has warned the change needs to be driven by “patient care not overtime rates”.

10.45am Dentists have been warned not to buy a hand held x-ray machine which exposes patients to 10 times the recommended dose of radiation. The cheap imported devices could also pose a significant risk to dentists and dental nurses, health officials said.
10.43am The new national strategy for nursing in England is due to be launched later today at a conference of senior nurses. The strategy has been drawn up by NHS Commissioning Board chief nursing officer Jane Cummings and Viv Bennett, the Department of Health’s director of nursing.
7.02am: Good morning, on HSJ today a study examining the impact the reforms have had on relationship between clinical directors and general managers found barriers to the working relationship were lines of accountability, lack of time, and trust and understanding of each other’s roles. “Fraught” and “tense” have been used to describe the relationship between clinicians and managers in the NHS.
