The public will not forgive the government if leaving the EU damages the NHS, Sir Vince Cable has said.

The Liberal Democrats leader made the comments in Liberated Podcast, on which HSJ editor Alastair McLellan was a guest.

Sir Vince said: “The NHS is a massively important institution; all the surveys show it is the issue [the public] want political parties to get right and if the effect of Brexit is to cause serious damage to the NHS then I think the government will not be forgiven for it.”

As well as Brexit, the former business secretary and Mr McLellan discussed “historically low” NHS funding, integrated care reform and strain on the NHS workforce – “the issue that keeps chief executives up at night”.
