As a recruiter, I think ANYONE with leadership potential should be groomed for leadership. However, we operate in the real world and opportunities may be denied to a set of people for a variety of reasons. On the other hand, I have seen a number of candidates who have gone through a number of programmes and on the whole I will stick my neck out and say that I have not been very impressed with some of them! Expectations on both sides tend not to managed (some candidates for instance expect to waltz into senior roles) and I feel that the development of individuals needs to be holistic and has to be from the inside out. Academic intelligence and or representation should not be the only criteria but also emotional intelligence, social intelligence, the environment (and or current and future needs of the Trust), political awareness, resilience and the alignment of personal and organisational values.
