I think the evidence of transmission is significantly greater for aerosol droplets from an infected to a non-infected oro/nasopharynx, hence the emphasis on 'social distancing', reducing household contact, ventilation rather than 'hygiene. Yes the virus is detectable on hard surfaces for some time but it seems much less likely that we directly transmit it by hand to our oro/nasopharynx. Though the message are good for disinfectant/bleach/sanitiser sales.
There continues to be misunderstanding about the question of whether people die from covid or with it from co-morbidity - hence the most reliable figures on death are based on excess deaths (numbers/rates in excess of those by comparison with the average of 5 previous years) which also evens out any international classification differences in the cause of death.
