Cupris Health: Cupris smartphone connected medical devices and remote referral software

The judges said: “Our winning project not only has clear benefits for patients, but benefits the health service as a whole. It is simple to use, but truly innovative. It has enormous potential with all health sectors both nationally as well as internationally.”

Opthamology is one of the busiest outpatient specialities and accounts for at least 10 per cent of all outpatient appointments. Seventy per cent of these patients then require a follow up appointment. Each year the NHS also spends around £250m on three million outpatient ear, nose and throat consultations.

Cupris Health is looking to reduce the number of consultations needed in both Ophthalmology and ENT through the creation of smartphone connected medical devices.

Founded by an ENT surgeon, a designer and ex-investment banking analyst, Cupris has launched a smart phone connected device that can be used to capture clinical images of the ear and retina. Each device can then send data and images to cloud storage. Patient information is also stored on the Cupris app and can be shared between clinicians along with the images.

In 2014 Cupris won an NHS England funded contract to develop and test this technology for people with learning disabilities. The devices allow carers of people with learning disabilities to easily capture images and send this to GPs, who then use the information to identify potential ear problems and treat minor conditions.

By enabling regular image capture, hearing tests and the building of patient’s history, GPs are provided with the information needed to make more accurate diagnosis, treatments or referrals.
