The winners of the HSJ Awards 2024 were revealed last night to honour exceptional achievements in the NHS, with Wes Streeting telling them they were an “inspiration” who showed they could “get the NHS back on its feet”.

With Vodafone Business as the headline partner, the awards spanned 26 categories, celebrating the dedication and innovation of NHS staff across the country.

This year saw 1,350 entries in the first stage, with over 200 judges contributing more than 215 hours to select the finalists. Categories recognised accomplishments from clinical leadership to environmental impact, highlighting significant contributions in a challenging year for healthcare.

With NHS Charities Together as the charity partner, the event provided a platform to commend NHS professionals and teams whose efforts have kept the healthcare system advancing. The HSJ Awards remains one of the most respected events in healthcare, recognising the NHS’s remarkable impact and commitment.

Health and social care secretary Wes Streeting, speaking at the ceremony, told nominees their work created “inspiration”, saying that although the NHS was “broken”, “when we point to your achievements and celebrate your achievements, it will give hope to a cynical country that it can be turned around”.

Their success stories “give people hope and confidence that there are people who can show us what the future can look like in terms of innovation and new ways of working”, he said.

Award nominees and winners were “showing what the NHS at its best can be”, and “are proof” that returning to a high-performing service “is possible”, Mr Streeting told the audience.

He said the service “can draw hope and inspiration from the achievements we’re celebrating tonight and we can leave evening full of pride, optimism and confidence that this generation can get the NHS from the worst crisis in its history, get it back on its feet, make it fit for the future and look back with pride for the rest of our lives that we were the team that did that for our country.”

And HSJ editor Alastair McLellan told the gathering: “The achievements you have made are so vital.

“Vital in three ways. Firstly, your work demonstrates that the NHS is full of innovators – and not the sluggish, stuck-in-its-ways monolith it is so often caricatured as.

“Secondly, it shows that the NHS employs people who know how to make a little money go a long way – and can therefore be trusted with larger sums.

“Thirdly, it helps build the case for more investment in leadership capacity – something the Darzi review highlighted but is always difficult for governments to justify to the public.”
