WINNER: The Great North Children’s Hospital, The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust – BReATHE
Sponsored by
This initiative – Beating Regional Asthma Through Health Education – aimed to reduce the risks of death and hospital admissions for young people with asthma.
It has led to a 29 per cent reduction in paediatric emergency asthma admissions – equating to a cost saving of £77,000 over three years – and improved asthma control.
It used online resources for both healthcare professionals, families, young people and schools, nurse-led “one stop shop” clinics, and new pathways for emergency admission, backed up by an asthma discharge bundle and follow-up phone calls.
Specialists reviewed higher-risk patients after discharge and trusts across the region adopted standardised care and cascade training was provided for school health teams.
