WINNER: Barts Health Trust and Explain My Procedure – Animation Supported Consent

Sponsored by

GRI

An audit showed that only a third of cardiac patients at Barts fully understood procedures, risks and benefits, and alternatives when they consented to treatment.

This initiative allows them to view animated videos of their forthcoming procedure online at home in five languages, and raise questions before consenting – and means 90 per cent of patients now fully understand what they are consenting to.

If replicated across the NHS, this could save £30m in legal claims around consent and could save staff time in explaining procedures to patients. The videos can also be viewed in pre-assessment clinics and emergency patients can be shown them in hospital.
