Breaking Barriers in Healthcare Inequality Through a UK-First Skin-Tone Inclusive Softie

Partnered byNHSRaceandHealthObservatoryLogo

A softie is a lightweight fabric prosthesis for women post-mastectomy. The Royal Marsden’s rollout of the UK’s first skin-tone inclusive softies represents a significant step to providing equitable patient-centred care and showcases the hospitals dedication to addressing healthcare inequalities.

Trust staff Natalie Johnson and Sarah Adomah spearheaded this initiative, recognising the need for skin tone-appropriate softies. This led to a partnership with Nubian Skin, with funding by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, to diversify skin-toned softies.

Organisers say they have received positive feedback from patients and staff, highlighting inclusivity and a dedication to improving patients’ quality of life.
