The BLISTER Project – Reducing Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections

Cardiac implantable electronic device infection is a devastating procedural complication, causing considerable patient mortality worldwide. Through a multicentre collaboration involving more than 12,000 patients, the team has developed a novel score for identifying patients at increased risk of CIED infection. The BLISTER score assigns incremental antimicrobial strategies to these patients, and this cost-effective bedside intervention has been adopted by NHS England as the national standard for reimbursement, and is also endorsed by the British Heart Rhythm Society.

Since adopting BLISTER as a risk stratification tool, CIED infection rates are down to 0.5 per cent, with annual cost savings of £103,000.
