Guy’s & St Thomas’ FT: Mechanical Life Support

The aim was to provide a clear approach to assist bedside nurses and junior doctors when initially responding to an emergency for a patient with mechanical circulatory support. After multiple iterations and refinement through simulation, the organisers created a set of emergency algorithms for patients with left ventricular assist devices, impella and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation. Subsequently, a course was developed that followed the format of other advanced life support courses to train staff members through a mixture of didactic, hands-on and simulation training. The judges found the application impressive, highlighting a strong aim, ambition, and clear progress.
