Barnsley Hospital FT: Nurse Lead Discharge Project for Children Aged Between 2-16 Years Old With Minor Head Injuries Training Package
This was aimed at reducing length of stay in the paediatric emergency department for patients aged two to 16 presenting with head injuries by testing a criteria-based nurse-led pathway. Quality improvement methodology was followed to engage stakeholders (including patients and families), develop a training package, test a nurse-led pathway and monitor progress using time-series data. Over six months the trust achieved an overall reduction of 28 per cent in ED LOS for head injury patients (75 per cent reduction for those on a nurse-led pathway). There was no increase in reattendances, no missed diagnoses, and excellent feedback from patients, parents and staff. This initiative is now spreading locally.
