At first glance, hospital “chains” might have appeared to be the focus of Sir David Dalton’s review into new provider models. But he made it clear in an exclusive interview with HSJ and at a recent roundtable event that exploring a number of new organisational models for the provider sector.
The chief executive Salford Royal Foundation Trust was appointed by the health secretary in February to investigate what barriers prevent hospitals joining together into larger, non-geographic groups, but Sir David told HSJ in May he hoped the review would offer NHS providers a series of new options.
HSJ will host a live Q&A with Sir David at 12pm on Tuesday 8 July. The scope for the discussion will be wide ranging, and Sir David is keen to hear the thoughts of leaders and staff at provider organisations, patients and commissioners.
If providers do form chains, how can we ensure they remain accountable to their local populations? How can the best providers of NHS care be incentivised to work across different locations?
Another important area is how can patients be involved in improving the quality of services provided. What new organisational options can improve the quality of care?
Also, how might staff be affected by the changes to the organisation they work for? The review wants to know how and why the organisational form of a provider would matter to staff.
You can leave your views and questions for him now in the comment thread below. The live discussion will start at 12pm on 8 July.
