Lewisham and Greenwich Trust: A Safer Approach to Ethical Feeding Decisions
A protocol was devised to guide ethical feeding decisions in individuals who are unsafe to eat and drink orally but not appropriate for alternative nutrition. This innovation emerged as a result of audits revealing significant delays in clinical decision making on nutrition planning in people with advanced dementia.
The most significant achievement within this is having a process that not only encapsulates a multidisciplinary team decision but integrally acknowledges the persons wishes and beliefs around eating and drinking.
The judges felt this was amazing work and were very impressed with both the emergency department in reach, as well as the out of hours availability.
