This should not come as a surprise to the NHS. 8 July 2011, the NHS quoted The Independent: "“Suicide rates have risen sharply across Europe since the banking crisis.”

"A study has found that Britain had been affected particularly hard, experiencing an 8% rise in suicide rates between 2007 and 2009. Ireland and Greece, two of the countries reported to be in greater financial difficulty, have seen suicides rise 13% and 16% respectively." The research associated increased unemployment with the increased suicide rates. There is little doubt that Covid-19 will cause another spike in unemployment, which, combined with other factors such as isolation, is sure to have an even more adverse effect on mental health.
