Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust: Establishing a Substantive Health Equity Team and Embedding a Holistic Approach to Improving Equity in Maternity Services

In October 2022, the local maternity service recruited a Consultant Midwife in Health Equity in response to recognised gaps in equity highlighted through national, regional, and local reports. The team expanded and now includes: two whole-time equivalent band 7 Specialist Health Equity midwives and a linked consultant obstetrician. The team have worked tirelessly and continue to do so to embed a holistic approach to improving local health equity in maternity care by incorporating population health and life course approaches, data exploration, service user and multidisciplinary, cross-sector collaborative working.
