Marianne Griffiths of Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust has been named Chief Executive of the Year at the 2016 HSJ Awards.
Judges said Ms Griffiths was a “selfless and devoted” leader who inspired and supported staff do their best for patients. The trust was awarded an outstanding rating by the Care Quality Commission in 2016.
Other winners at the ceremony, held at the O2 InterContinental London Hotel on Wednesday night, included Liverpool CCG, which was named Clinical Commissioning Group of the year, and East London Foundation Trust, which won the Provider Trust of the Year category.
London Ambulance Service Trust was winner in the Workforce category, for its innovative approach to mentoring which judges said made a “real difference to staff morale and patient care in a challenging environment”. Portsmouth Hospitals Trust with Wessex AHSN was winner in the Primary Care Innovation category for its Mission projects to identify patients on GP registers at risk of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The HSJ Awards were launched in 1981 to recognise the projects and initiatives that deliver healthcare excellence and innovation. This year there were prizes in 24 categories, including a special prize for EU staff which was shared by six people.
In his opening speech at the ceremony, HSJ editor Alastair McLellan praised the contribution of all NHS staff. He said: “Over the last 35 years, the HSJ Awards have grown to become the largest celebration of healthcare excellence in the UK – and very probably the biggest healthcare awards in the world.
It has done so for one reason above all: the dedication of NHS staff from every discipline and every sector to drive improvements which benefit patient care and strengthen a service which has become the defining characteristic of this nation.”
